Lawn sweepers
63Lawn Sweepers are tools for yard care that collect debris from your lawn and deposit it into a hopper or container much like a lawn mower collects the grass clippings. In fact a lawn sweeper could be used to collect the grass clippings that a mulching lawn mower leaves behind. The principle behind a lawn sweeper is a rotating brush-like cylinder that picks up loose items as it rolls over them. Things like twigs, cut grass, trash, wood chips, small rocks etc... will all be picked up by a lawn sweeper. The brush that picks up the unwanted debris from your yard also provides the benefit of standing the individual blades of grass on end. This can make it easier to get that perfect manicured lawn after you mow because the grass will be cut to the same level. If you have reseeded parts of your lawn, take extra caution when using lawn sweepers, because brand new grass is not hardy enough to take the brushing from a lawn sweeper. Wait at least a couple of weeks longer to use your lawn sweeper on new grass than the grass seed packaging says to wait before you can walk on the new grass.
Lawn sweeper or a rake?
Lawn Sweepers replace the rake for most common yard work tasks. Using a lawn sweeper to clean up your yard is a much less demanding task than using a rake to do the entire yard. During seasons when there are not tons of leaves on your yard using a lawn sweeper is ideal. Often you can sweep the whole yard without emptying the hopper. This doesn't take much more effort than walking around the lawn. When the leaves do start falling in autumn, lawn sweepers provide a very easy way pick up the bulk of the leaves. If you are looking for a way to get out of raking the yard, a lawn sweeper is probably the answer.
Types of Lawn Sweepers
There are two basic types of lawn sweepers: a push lawn sweeper and a tow behind lawn sweeper. These two tools perform the same job, they just have different ways of implementing it. A push lawn sweeper looks very similar to a standard push lawn mower. It has a rotating brush inside a housing that spins using the power you provide by pushing it. The push lawn sweeper is the cheaper of the two options, but often the amount of debris the hopper can hold is much less than with a tow behind lawn sweeper. A push lawn sweeper is ideal for most residences. A rule of thumb would be, if you mow your lawn with a push lawn mower then a push lawn sweeper is probably perfect for you. If you mow your lawn with a riding lawn mower then I would consider using a tow behind lawn sweeper.
Is a lawn sweeper right for me?
Although lawn sweepers are a great option for cleaning your yard, you will still need to keep your rake for the hard to reach places like under trees and along fence lines. Think about how a lawn mower will not cut the grass in these less accessible places. Another consideration when thinking about buying a lawn sweeper is the layout of your property. If you have a fairly flat consistent yard, most lawn sweepers will do the job well. If you have an uneven or hilly yard, you might have to read some reviews on the specific sweeper to see if it can handle uneven terrain. Lawn sweepers don't really take a lot of abuse in day to day use, so the construction quality can seem fairly low. Most of the tow behind sweepers are built to a much higher quality tolerance, but this added quality also comes at a cost.
